apple tree disease #872421

Asked June 10, 2024, 1:00 PM EDT

My apple trees are starting to get brown and black spots and leaf damage, the apples are about 3/4 inch diameter and some are getting damage that looks like the side of the apple is flat or sinking in and brown. Can you tell me what I may have and what to treat the trees with? Also my plumb tree is infected as well with something that is putting brown / tan flat spots on the fruit?

Mark: Your tree (leaves and fruit) are showing signs of apple scab, a fungal disease that is common in wet springs. Some varieties are more susceptible than others so one tree might show symptoms like you have sent and an adjacent apple tree might show little or nothing. It will not kill the tree. The disfigured apples will be edible when you peel away the skin but won't have as much "flesh" overall. There are some treatments that might help but no need to use them now since we are in a largely dry cycle (except for this weekend), so the disease is largely done spreading for this year. Here is link about the disease: https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/crabapple-malus-spp-scab
There are few effective fungicides available to home gardeners.
