Mulching asparagus #872401

Asked June 10, 2024, 11:46 AM EDT

My raised veg beds area often runs 10 degrees warmer air temps than forecasted. This is great for crops growing (I successfully harvest corn even) but makes it harder to conserve water. I’m starting an asparagus bed and feel the need to mulch it for that purpose. What might be the preferred organic material, especially considering asparagus’ nutritional needs while establishing? I have a good supply of yr old leaves I could mow down to better size. If nitrogen is recommended, I could use fresh grass clippings. I could buy clean, organic straw. Plus, I’m experimenting with fallen tulip tree blossom petals as mulch on a couple of beds. I don’t know what all I don’t know so I’ll appreciate your expertise. Thx so much.

The old crumbly leaves are great. If using lawn clippings, they should be dry to prevent mat formation and NOT treated with any weed killers.
