Need info on addressing oak wilt problem #872383

Asked June 10, 2024, 10:57 AM EDT

An adjacent property owner to us has almost 40 forested acres, primarily of red oak and beech trees. Oak wilt has begun to kill the oaks. It is early, but the property owner when presented with the fact of the infection is choosing to not do anything. "All trees die" was his reaction. We are hoping that he might choose to do a safe culling of the infected trees and the area around it and finance that by at least a selective cutting of the rest of the woods. What help can MSU Extension give us to better inform and hopefully persuade the landowner to take action.

Muskegon County Michigan

Expert Response

Hi Jim,
I highly suggest calling the District Forester for Muskegon County, Rod Denning. While not an MSU employee, he is a highly skilled forester and arborist and can help assess the situation and most effective next steps.
Rod Denning can be reached at<personal data hidden> x5

Thank you,
-Julie
