Lantern fly issue #872375
Asked June 10, 2024, 10:38 AM EDT
I just discovered lantern fly nymphs on my Tree of Heaven. I meant to remove the tree a few years ago but forgot about it. Anyway, I'd like to treat the tree safely. I don't want to harm my neighbors or wildlife. I also read where the lantern flies have not caused as much damage as originally predicted. See https://www.humanegardener.com/stop-squishing-spotted-lanternflies/.
In any event, what is your advice on how to proceed?
Thank you!

Expert Response
UME and MDA do not want residents using insecticide to treat SLF, so we do not recommend it in this situation. Regardless of what "The Humane Gardener" says, this is an invasive species in our area and it's best to remove the nymphs. You can use horticultural oil or scrape them off the tree.
Additionally, it would be good to remove the Ailanthus to eliminate this situation altogether.
