Land division training for local health department #872368

Asked June 10, 2024, 10:20 AM EDT

Interested in training for county sanitarians in the well and septic permitting programs. Staff are new and have not worked through land divisions, site condo and subdivision developments. County administrators and assessors are approving land splits that do not meet our District Sanitary Cod requirements for minimum setbacks and county sanitarians are being asked to determine whether a site is approved for on-site septic systems and drinking water wells.

Expert Response

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to MSU Extension with your question about land division trainings for a local health department.
MSU Extension does have a in-depth four hour training for local officials (typically assessors) who review and approve land divisions. This training talks generally about compliance with local ordinances, but does not get into specifics for septics. Unfortunately there are no upcoming offerings of that program currently planned for 2024, but there is potential to partner with a local organization to offer it if there is interest and funding.

I do have a colleague who is in conversation with EGLE about a training offering focused on authority/jurisdiction of and coordination between health department, EGLE, and local land division official. This would be fall programming at the soonest (winter/spring more likely). In the meantime, the Onsite Wastewater Management (michigan.gov) program is a resource to share.

Please reach out if you have additional questions or follow up.

Thank you for the quick response.  Is the training you mention available as a webinar recording?  It may still be helpful to understand the land division process.

Hello,

Unfortunately there is not a recording of our land division training to share.

If the goal is to better understand the land division process you may be interested in the MSU Extension article "Land Division Act basics for landowners". That is a good general overview. We also have sample land division application form and land division review worksheet available.
