Being kind to wildlife #872361

Asked June 10, 2024, 9:17 AM EDT

Hello, I have friends buried in Resurrection Cemetery in Grand Rapids, and noticed a herd of deer and turkeys that eat the grass seed on the new graves. Is there something we can put down to discourage the wildlife from eating the seed? Thank you for all the work you do~

Expert Response

Hello Karen,

Preventing birds from eating grass seed in such a public location is difficult. There are several alternatives including:

Netting: cover the area with bird netting or fine mesh to prevent the birds from reaching the seeds.

Row Covers: light row covers can be draped over the new seeds and will allow sunlight, air and water through.

Fencing: temporary fencing around the area may keep small animals out.

Chemical Repellents: these can be used to deter animals but must be applied frequently.

Hay: covering the area evenly with hay can be used but the downside is that hay contains seeds of many plants which may compete with the grass seed to grow.

Grass seed in rolls may provide some protection from birds.

Municipal governments frequently grass large areas successfully. It may provide you with the information that you need for your area.
