Hello Richard,
Oh, those deer! They are such a problem in so many areas, especially when it comes to eating the plants in our yards! It is almost a losing battle without a lot of diligence.
There are deer sprays and granules that do work and can be found at many areas stores. They require consistent spraying according to the label directions. And, I have used them many times with success. However, if you forget to spray or we have a big rain, then the process needs to be repeated. There are some that claim they will work regardless of rain, so check the labels.
I have had success using deer pucks - they are little grayish pucks that float on a wire and you stick them in the ground. They must be replaced every season and emote an aroma that is offensive to the deer. Again, place them around your plants every so many feet, according to the package directions.
Lastly, barring a very tall fence, you may want to consider replacing your plant materials with those that are considered more deer resistant. They seem to o object to plants that are picky, fuzzy and have a strong odor. (that being said, they do love roses).
Unfortunately, it is a trial and error process. Because even if something says it is deer resistant, it doesn't make it 100% true. Often, young deer do not really know what they like and don't like, so they come and do a bit of sampling.
I wish I had a magic wand for you!
Thank you,
Kathleen
