What type of mites/insects are these? #872317

Asked June 09, 2024, 5:53 PM EDT

They are prolific and damage my seedlings and young plants. They are very tiny (see pic with finger for perspective). We have taken steps such as reducing larger organic additives to the soil (only well composted), put out sticky traps (they catch a lot). Would diatomaceous watch around seedlings help, neem oil?

Expert Response

Hello,

Those are Collembola, or Springtails. They are harmless. They usually feed on bacteria and fungus in the soil, and make up the bottom of the food chain for many other predators like spiders and beetles. If you're seeing too many, control the moisture of the plants. They like moist conditions and may actually be a sign you are watering too much. Allow the soil to dry out a bit more and likely the population will drop.
