I planted a rose of Sharon Lucy seven years ago and it’s been nothing but brilliant. Weeks ago I saw this at the trunk base and now only half of the tree has pushed Green and has leaves.

Last year it took some extra time for the other half to push green as well, but I never noticed this at the base. It’s possible it could’ve been there but I’m not sure.

This is a memorial tree for our lost daughter and I was wondering if I should take out the damage and cover it with neem oil or something. I don’t want to lose this tree.

Expert Response

The stems that have the bark coming off are likely going to die if they aren't dead already. The dead plant material can be removed, there is no need to apply neem or other pesticides.

It looks like this plant is planted too deep; you should be able to see the root flare.  This website provides some information on what you can do for plants that are planted too deep: https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/planted-too-deeply.shtml
