Viburnum Overgrowth #872293

Asked June 09, 2024, 2:23 PM EDT

Our 3 Vibernums are about 30 years old, 8’ tall and healthy, and we each year trim about 2’ of new growth in the Fall, but now the largest of the plants is folded over from the weight of the new growth. The plant has 8 large ground stalks, each about 1” diameter. How should we trim this plant for a more uniform growth ?

Thank you for reaching out to Sk2.extension.

My concern is the age of your shrubs.  They do have life spans and too much trimming at one time could be more than an old shrub can handle.  I would start by trimming like you usually do.  Then maybe in about 6 weeks or so, do it again.  Keep an eye on the shrubs and keep them watered when it does get hot and dry.

If you want to do more, do so in late winter, early spring before the shrubs leaf out.  Remember your shrubs are old.
