Japanese maple not growing #872286

Asked June 09, 2024, 1:09 PM EDT

Hi, This year my Japanese maple decided not to grow in on half of it. Anything I can do about it? Photos attached. Thanks!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, John.  I suspect that your tree is the victim of a soil-based fungus described here:  https://pnwhandbooks.org/plantdisease/host-disease/maple-acer-spp-verticillium-wilt    This is an incurable disease that impacts many maple trees.

However, before removing the tree, I suggest that you submit plant and soil samples to the OSU Plant Clinic for diagnosis:  https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/how-submit-plant-materials

Good luck!
