Swamp maple dying? #872278

Hi there is a large swamp maple behind our house. It did not lead out the way we expected this year higher up where it’s hard for us to get a good look. Now those high branch ends look like they have brown curled up something. Is it dying or are we seeing something g else. This is only our third summer in East Lansing.

Expert Response
We managed to cut one off with an extended loper.
Hi Elizabeth.
So glad you were able to get a close-up of one of the dead branch ends.
I have a few questions that will help me narrow down the possibilities:
Is the tree in a yard setting? Forest? Near agriculture fields?
Can you please submit a picture of the entire tree, from a distance?
Has there been any construction activity around the tree?
Is the tree near a driveway?
Has anything else changed in the tree's surroundings?
While I know it's an extra step, I do appreciate the additional information.
Thank you,
-Julie

Thanks. There used to be more trees a few years before we arrived in 2022, our neighbor said. Willows maybe. There is no pavement anywhere near, no changes that I know of. It’s actually in our neighbors yard. They are very elderly and not able to do much although they have sprinklers.
We do not. This pic is from our deck.
Thank you for the additional information.
Could this have been frost damage? We did have a frost warning up north (Grayling) a week before you submitted the picture (around May 30th); did you all also have a frost then?
Does the tree still look healthy otherwise? As in, all the other leaves are a normal color and normal size? If that is the case now, and continues to be the case, I wouldn't worry too much at this point. If anything changes with the tree, please feel free to reach back out right away.
Thank you,
-Julie
