A heavy growth of English Ivy is covering the trunk and branches of a an old elm tree in town and the upper branches are dead. Does ivy constrict the nutrient flow through the tree by limiting expansion of the trunk? Can ivy eventually kill the tree?

Expert Response
Ivy can eventually kill a tree by smothering the leaves , but not by constricting nutrient flow. There are treatment options to kill the ivy before it destroys the tree.
