Can I use whole burdock leaves as weed control without composting them first?

Expert Response

Hi Tracy,

Research on using burdock for weed control has focused on extracts from the leaves and roots, so I’m not sure just using leaves would work. Here’s the research citation I found:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31271331/

Burdock can be composted but unless you want more burdock make sure no seeds or roots are put in the compost. I can’t find anything saying compost with burdock in it has any more weed control properties than ordinary compost.

Hope this helps. Thanks.
