Back knot, remove or keep the trees? #872223
Asked June 08, 2024, 5:54 PM EDT
Hi, we have 2 Japanese cherry trees that have had black knot fungus at least since 2019. It is pretty extensive, too much to prune out. Yet they still have lots of leaves, lots of life. Nearby is a Mesabi Cherry tree, and I would be bummed if it "csught" the fungus, which I know is windborn. What would you recommend - keep or remove the 2 trees? What rationale would you use to decide?

This article recommends keeping the trees as long as they are leafing out. I could not find any research saying Mesabi cherry is more or less succeptible to black knot. A fungicide may be helpful for that tree. Good luck
