In general you want to avoid planting any tree or shrub right up against the house. This will help avoid issues with roots affecting foundations. Also, consider where your sewer or septic line is and avoid planting in that area.
You'll want to give the plant enough space to grow into its natural form. This will reduce the chance of branches rubbing on the home and give you space to do house maintenance tasks. For example, if a tree has a spread of 10 feet, then plant it at least 5 feet away from the house.
