Help to ID seed #872161

Asked June 08, 2024, 9:50 AM EDT

Hi-My husband received seed from older friend and isn't sure what type of rye seed it is.  Can you ID?  Pictures attached

Crawford County Michigan

Expert Response

Hello
One expert who looked at this could not ID it and thought genetic testing might be necessary.

Another way would be to take 10 seeds and plant them in a pot, and grow them on so leaves, etc. of plants can be seen.

Label each pot with the ID of which picture of the seed goes with which pot.

My husband was told rye- either and perennial & winter. Does that help?
Thanks, Jane

Here are some bulletins that show the plant and seed characteristics. You can compare to what you have, though some of the more delicate parts of the seed may have broken off, compared to ehat is pictured.
Perennial rye

winter rye

If this seed is for planting a crop across acerage, let me know so I can refer you to the agriculture group. Right now you are in the reaidential garden group.
Thank you?
Thanks for info--my husband was given this seed-wasn't sure if he could plant in his deer food plot on our 10 acre property in Crawford County.

This is only time asked about "crop across acerage". No need to send them my info

Thanks for the info!
