What's wrong with my crabapple tree? #872144

Asked June 07, 2024, 9:57 PM EDT

We've lived in our home for the past 11 years and have been really enjoying this mature flowering crabapple tree every spring. This year it blossomed as usual but I noticed not as many leaves formed. Now it looks so very thin and bare of leaves. I'm wondering if it is diseased. Or could it be dying? Or maybe it is stressed? Last August of 2023 we added about 20 tons of dirt, new seed, and an irrigation system to our yard in the proximity of the tree. My husband is wondering if that placed stress on the roots. I've included photos taken today (6/7/24). Do you think it will "bounce back" next summer? Is this temporary?

Expert Response

Hello!

From the pictures you sent, it seems the tree has Apple Scab caused by a fungus, but I can't be 100% sure.  Because the tee is in such a prominent place and provides shade for your hostas, I would suggest calling an arborist to confirm.  The arborist can treat the disease, trim the tree if necessary, and advise you on future care.

I have attached articles about crab apple tree diseases and 1 about hiring a tree care specialist.
