Cottonwood Issue #872062
Asked June 07, 2024, 12:50 PM EDT
I have an issue with the cottonwood tree in my yard. Not sure if it’s sick and there’sa chance to save it, or if I have to take it down. There are some dead branches near the top, as well as some near the bottom of the tree.
Can you tell what might be wrong with it from the attached pictures?

Expert Response
It looks like a bacterial issue called wetwood or slime flux. It is not fatal, but the tree could weaken over time. It is common on poplars like cottonwood. It can't be cured.
A few dead branches are not an issue, but if you notice all of the top branches are dying, that means there is a serious issue. Cottonwoods have weak limbs and they are easily broken, as you are probably aware. If you are concerned, call an certified arborist who will give objective advice.
