Best Trees to absorb excess 8ft deep water #872054

Asked June 07, 2024, 12:28 PM EDT

We have property at the foot of a 30ft high hill and would like to plant a tree(s) to absorb water in the natural water table approx 8-10ft below surface grade. A fruit tree would be nice, but would also consider others.

Expert Response

Dear Jim,

Thank you for contacting us about choosing a tree. Several factors will determine the best selection for your site:
  • Full sun, or how many hours of direct sun per day?
  • Soil type: clay, silt, or sand?
  • Amount of soil moisture at various times of the year: Is there any standing water (seasonally wet/flooded?)? For how long?
  • What types of trees, shrubs, or vegetation are growing in the same conditions?
  • What is your growing zone and elevation?
  • How much space is available for the crown and the roots of a full-grown tree?
  • A photo would be helpful.
Please reply to this email. Alternatively, you may call the Extension Help Desk (1320 Capitol St NE #110, Salem, OR 97301

We'll be happy to try to advise you with the additional information.
