Expert Response

Hello,
Junipers can be lovely, but they are very slow growing and do not respond to pruning the way many deciduous shrubs will.  There is no easy solution for getting these shrubs to rejuvenate and be handsome additions to your landscape.  It might be best to replace them.  Make sure whatever you are putting into the landscape fits the conditions that are available.  Monitor the area in question and determine how many hours of sunlight it gets, so you know whether to pick a plant that needs full sun (6+ hours of sun), partial sun (4-6 hrs) or more shaded conditions.  You might take the opportunity to get a soil test, (you can get a soil test here: https://homesoiltest.msu.edu/), and you should determine what the drainage is in the area. (Does it often seem very dry?  Does it have standing water after a rain event?)  These things will help you chose a plant that will thrive in the conditions you have.
