Can we save this tree? #872036

Asked June 07, 2024, 11:11 AM EDT

We have a Black Hills Spruce that has been yellowing on one side for three years now. We have had experts tell us there is nothing we can do. One side did have some new growth this year. Should we cut off the leader? Is there anything you would suggest?

Expert Response

Hello,

From the information provided, it is difficult to determine cause of the problem. Recommendation would be to cut/remove branches that are dead and void of needles back to the stem.  You could also trim down dead leader to few inches above the uppermost whorl with live branches.  Yes, you can attempt to create a new leader by pulling a live horizontal branch upwards and attaching into a vertical position with the stump of the old leader.  In time the tree will naturally grow a new leader, but this will accelerate the process.
