oak leaves on top of garden soil #872035

Asked June 07, 2024, 11:09 AM EDT

Is it ok to till last season's oak leaves into the soil when preparing the garden for spring planting? The oak tree is near the garden and some of its leaves fall on the garden.

Dakota County Minnesota

Expert Response

Yes. That will not cause any problems. They can take some time to break down, but the tilling should shred them, which speeds up the composting. They won't really change the pH like some viral posts claim. Don't till in a huge amount, but a centimeter or so of depth will be fine.
