Ulmus x. 'Frontier' trunk splitting #872005

Asked June 07, 2024, 9:03 AM EDT

We installed a 4" caliper Ulmus x. 'Frontier' 4 weeks ago. A split, low on the trunk was observed 5 days ago which appears to be through the bark and appeared to be seeping. The opening was observed to have a large gathering of ants as well. It also appears that the split may continue up the trunk, but has not fully opened to the outside of the bark.

Expert Response

Greetings,

This may or may not be a problem but I think a little caution is advised.  I found a great fact sheet to share on bark splitting that is attached. I also recommend you contact an arborist to examine the tree while the problem is new in case there is a course of treatment needed. You can find an arborist at this LINK
