Tomatoe plant issues #871991

Asked June 07, 2024, 6:21 AM EDT

I bought and planted green, sturdy, healthy looking tomatoe plants. Planted approximately 2 weeks ago. They look bad now. Wilty leaves, some with spots and some plants have a dark slightly silvery appearance. What is wrong? Pictures included.

Expert Response

Hi Yvonne, thanks for the question.

The pictures show a few problems.  The first picture show what appears to be sun scald on the leaves and possibly some insect feeding. The sun scald is a common problem when a plant is suddenly exposed to brighter light.  It is a symptom of not being hardened off properly.  The next two pictures seem to show some nutrient issues and possibly some watering issues or just transplant shock.  This could be a nutrient deficiency or a pH problem.  A soil test (Home | MSU Soil Test) would answer this problem. In lieu of a soil test, use a tomato fertilizer. Be sure to follow the instructions.  Keep an eye on the spots.  If they become more or bigger it could be a disease. I hope this helps.
