Mulch #871988

Asked June 07, 2024, 1:03 AM EDT

Recently, the gametophytes / flowers from my Douglas Firs blew off the branches & are all over every surface on the ground in my garden & beyond. There are a lot of them. After sweeping them up, can I use them as mulch around my plants? Would there be a reason not to do so?

Expert Response

Hi Alice and what a great question about using the pollen cones from your Douglas fir as mulch. As the cones are spent and bio-mass, much like grass cuttings or pine needles, they should make great mulch. I would spread and then water them, as they may tend to blow away.

Good job finding a use for such a natural product from our fir trees!
