Moth I.D.? #871987

Asked June 07, 2024, 1:01 AM EDT

Wanted to see if you folks could identify the species of this moth that was in our flower bed the other day, in Wasilla.

Matanuska-Susitna County Alaska

Expert Response

That is a hummingbird moth, Hyles gallii. They are a neat find, often being mistaken for a bird at first because of how they hover to feed. They are native to Alaska. The caterpillars can be found often on fireweed, they are large green or black with a distinct horn.
