Bonanza Peach not thriving #871974

Asked June 06, 2024, 9:39 PM EDT

Hello! On a whim we bought a Bonanza peach tree last spring. Some time around march. Because it was still a bit cold out we kept the plant in doors infront of a south facing window where it can get as much light as possible. I moved it outside in April. At this time I wasn’t sure what’s going on but the plant looked like it was in a terrible shape. Its leaves started to turn brown and fall off. So I thought it’s time to put it outside to get more sun. It’s not dead yet but it’s not producing new leaf buds and one branch looks like it has no leaves at all. The last picture (with the blooms) is how it looked like when we first bought it. Please help.

Expert Response

The tree doesn't look too bad in the images provided. The new growth is somewhat limited, but it looks relatively healthy and should do fine if you can keep it properly watered through the summer. I wouldn't do much to it right now other than remove the dead twigs and trim twigs with dead tips back to live tissue.

If you plan to plant it in the ground, the best time would be this fall, but if you need to get it in the ground now you can do that, but make sure it is properly planted and watered through the summer. For information on proper planting techniques of trees see our fact sheet Tree Planting Guide or Planting Trees and Shrubs.

If you want good peaches to harvest next spring I encourage you to review our fruit tree fact sheets - https://extension.okstate.edu/search-results.html?q=peaches; peaches in general require a good pest management program to get quality fruit. Hello Sir/Ma’am,

Thank you so much for the prompt response to my question. I’m not transplanting it in the ground but putting it in a larger pot but I will wait until the fall. I apologize for the late response there was illness in our family and then I forgot.
Thank you again.
