Expert Response

Hi Alisa,

Just to clarify, do you mean to get rid of the whole thing, or just to remove the suckers?

For the whole shrub, you can:

1. Dig it out, thoroughly.  Be sure to get the crown of the roots; you may need to remove a few shoots that try again to grow from any root pieces that are large enough and are missed.

2. Cut it to the ground and apply an herbicide according to the label instructions for stump killing (this usually involved applying minimally diluted chemicals to the stump with a brush or sponge applicator--follow the label instructions).

If you just want to remove the suckers, your only option is to cut or dig them out while leaving the desired potion of the shrub in place.

I hope this is helpful!

Cordially,

John
