Dealing with clay soil #871963

Asked June 06, 2024, 8:36 PM EDT

I’m trying to build a new garden bed for flowers. Lots of clay . What is the best way to loosen the clay? Is it ever advisable to add sand?

Expert Response

My first recommendation would be to get a soil test. Sometimes products are recommended online or in stores, to help loosen clay. The effectiveness of these is sometimes questionable and dependent on the existing soil type and pH. The addition of compost can help improve the soil over time. Adding sand will not help with your structure issues. It could potentially worsen problems that you have with the clay.
