Moth - Friend or Foe? #871962

Asked June 06, 2024, 8:34 PM EDT

I have been finding a lot of large brown moths with bright orange wings when open…..is this going to be a problem for my garden, cane berries, or fruits trees? I have disturbed them/spotted them on the soil, not plants so far.

Expert Response

Can you send a picture of the moth/butterfly? Are the wings when open solid orange or have they markings? Love to help you with a bit of help from you.

Thank you for your quick reply.  I thought the moths were gone, but saw one on the ground a couple days ago.  Unfortunately it only showed the orange wings when flying off so couldn’t see if there were any markings.  Here’s what I was able to document.image0.jpeg

Moths can be very difficult to identify, but this is probably an underwing moth. They are no problem for gardeners. To get a species ID we need a picture of the underside.
