Cranberry Bush destroyed by ? #871953

Asked June 06, 2024, 6:52 PM EDT

I have two cranberry bushes that have been decimated. Is this due to an insect or disease? Will the bushes come back next year? How should I have treated this? Are other nearby bushes at risk?

Expert Response

It looks like the damage caused by Japanese Beetles.  They apparently have fed and moved on.  Next spring you need to watch carefully and remove the initial scouts before they have a chance to feed and entice others.  Spraying now will do no good.  Read through this link for more information.  If you are going to treat grubs, please do so at the correct time of year but be aware, these beetles can fly long distances so just because you had them on your plants, does not mean you have a grub problem.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/managing-japanese-beetle-feeding   https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/japanese-beetles   https://extension.umn.edu/news/white-grub-control-lawns
