New maple tree with leader repair #871946

Asked June 06, 2024, 5:45 PM EDT

I bought a Celebration Maple tree from a local nursery. Before I bought it I inspected the bottom 3/4 of the tree trunk carefully. I planted it last Thursday and it look like it’s doing well. But a few days ago I noticed, when I was standing back from the tree, it has been repaired about a 1/4 of the way down from the top. See photos. Will this tree repair be ok as the tree grows larger? What would be the pros and cons? If it will be a problem, I will need to dig it up and return it for another tree. That is if they have another one. I bought this one due to limited space, as it does not get as wide as most maples.

Expert Response

The tree appears to be well on its way to a full recovery, but a stub comprising a portion of the original leader remains.

It might be best to remove the stub, but we recommend getting the opinion of a tree care professional before doing that. You may want to discuss your find with the vendor to get a first opinion, and with a tree care professional if questions remain.
