Frozen lilac flowers 2023 #871943

Asked June 06, 2024, 5:08 PM EDT

How are lilac tree is in the flower bed on our property north of prineville in crook county. Last spring the flowers suddenly turned brown and crispy. I supposed the cause to be weather related but damaging weather would have lasted a very short time. The condition continued with no change to the tree into this spring when the tree displayed three normal flowers for only a few days. What should I expect in the future? Will it ever drop those brown, crusty blooms? Will it heal itself? How can I help it recover? What do you advise? The attached photo was taken in May of 2024.

Expert Response

Hi Beverly,
Thank you for your lilac damage question. I cannot definitively determine what is happening with your plant from your photos, however, it could be lilac blight. The following article describes this plant disease. Photos and management options are included:

To keep your lilacs looking their best, they need to be pruned, fertilized and shaped almost every year, soon after they are done blooming in the late spring. Don’t wait too long, as next year’s blooms start forming in the summer. You don’t want to cut them off by mistake. Pruning in the winter will remove all the bloom for the following spring.
