I was interested in finding out if the extension service can help develop a way to positively impact our area by developing farmers ability to harvest (Zizania palustris) as economic development in the Clatskanie area?

Russell: I worked some in 2008 with a farmer family in Clatsop County that were very interested in wild rice. They grew about a half acre on dikeland ground that they could control the water levels most of the year. It went ok but ended when the husband died. There were a lot of challenges including the distance they would have had to go for processing relative to the market value of the crop. At the time, there was a farm in Mt. Angel area that was growing the crop in a heavily engineered set-up (based n the pictures I saw). Not sure if they are still in business. There was also a farm between Corvallis and Eugene that was growing wild rice. Again, not sure if they are still around. If you send me your email, I can send you a PDF of the wild rive presntation of 2008 that John Luna prepared. Attached is a 1996 OSU publication on the topic. hope this helps.
