I noticed this Spring , splitting of the Elm Tree bark. We have lived in the home 30 years.
This is one of the few large Elms still left in Grosse Pointe.
I added dirt and the stones to the street side of the tree trunk in the fall but no higher up than the dirt had already been.
The tree was trimmed a few years ago to keep lower branches off the house and to not fall off in storms and the tree had looked good after.
We do have the tree treated yearly (redacted) to prevent Dutch Elm Disease, for the last 5 years.
They only let me load 3 pictures. let me know if you want more.

Hi Rose,
It is not normal for the bark to crack like that on a mature tree.
I highly recommend calling a certified arborist to take a look. Arborists are certified through the International Society of Arboriculture, or ISA. ISA maintains a website that makes it easy to find a certified professional.

An arborist will be able to let you know what is going on with the tree, and further course of action.
Thank you,
-Julie
