Stella Cherry some shade #871920

Asked June 06, 2024, 2:58 PM EDT

I live in Castle Pines zone 5b, I have a spot I’d like to plant a Stella cherry or other sweet cherry near my house but it gets afternoon shade 1-5pm and in the winter a lot more. Is this too much shade for fruit production? Would a cherry even do well at this elevation 6200’ish?

Expert Response

Hi Tyler,

A sweet cherry is unlikely to perform well here; they tend to get nipped by late frost and not produce well; several pest insects can be problematic as well.  If you did want to try one, though, yes, at least 6 hours of sun a day would be considered "full sun."  Shade during the hottest part of the day could even be beneficial.

If the tree were more shaded in winter it could help promote fruit production, since the tree would be delayed as much as possible in coming out of winter dormancy.

Nothing compares to a cherry, but you would likely have better success with small fruits like raspberries or blackberries, which produce crops more reliably here.

I hope this is helpful.

Cordially,

John
