Black Walnut Tree question #871912

Hello!
We've noticed more bark on our Black Walnut tree has come off this Spring. It also looks like a little critter has dug a hole at the bottom. We love this tree. Is it sick? If so, is there something we can do to help?
Thanks!

Expert Response
If I'm seeing both sides of the tree, that is a serious frost crack. It is quite likely that some critter is nesting in there. There may also be some rotting organisms entering the tree in this crack. However, if the tree's overall health looks good, perhaps not.
I'd recommend having a certified arborist look at it. Look here:

At this point, probably TLC is all that can be done (keep it watered during droughts and keep it from harm such as mowers and weed whips). But an arborist can give you a prognosis.
