Shrub about 4 -6 Feet Tall #871887

Asked June 06, 2024, 12:53 PM EDT

Please give suggestions about a shrub/plant that is hardy, can withstand south sun, somewhat drought resistant, fast growing & stays green in winter.

Any thoughts about types of Privot bushes?

Jefferson County Colorado

Expert Response

Good morning!

You could use a privet! There are some cultivars that are better for that than others - the one I would suggest is Ligustrum vulgare 'Cheyenne'. Here is a little more information on them from a Colorado grower in Longmont.

Another other option that is evergreen that will do well is a mugo pine. They are smaller and can be slower growing so may not be a great fit for what you are looking for.

Thanks for reaching out!

Hi
Thank you for your suggestion.

I discovered another shrub growing in my Lakewood neighborhood: Japanese Spindle

Do you know anything about this shrub ?

I appreciate your speedy reply.

I would suggest the privet over the Japanese Spindle. It is an awesome looking shrub but does best in partial shade - it may get sunburn in your full sun location. It is also a zone six on the USDA hardiness zone. While Colorado has switched to a zone 6, depending where you are in Jefferson County, this plant could be marginally hardy and not overwinter.

Hello,
This is very useful & helpful information.  I appreciate your quick reply in helping me make planting decisions.  I will plant the Cheyenne Privet when choosing a shrub.

Thank you for being a great resource.

Best, Catherine
