Iris or Gladiolus #871884

Asked June 06, 2024, 12:45 PM EDT

Please identify these plants. Are they Iris or Gladiolus. I planted them but rodents dug out bulbs, now those orphaned stems scattered here and there. So, I need to collect and put them in 1 place. If they’re Iris, I’ll put them in shade are. If they’re Gladiolus, I’ll put them in full sun bed. Thank you very much.

Expert Response

It's difficult to be certain without blooms, but the root system suggests Iris, not Gladiolus. Both plants prosper in full sun (few Iris tolerate semi-shade and flower well, the main one in our area being the native Dwarf Crested Iris, which this plant looks too tall to be).
