I've been offered bamboo to make bean poles. When I'm done with it can it be shredded for mulch without risk of starting my own colony?

If the poles are dried there would be no risk of starting new growth and you would need pieces of the rhizomatous roots at the bottom for more to grow. Just make sure there isn't any roots with your bamboo. They do make great garden supports!
