Some pest eating bush, can't see any active insects #871873

Asked June 06, 2024, 11:38 AM EDT

Greetings. I have two bushes that are exhibiting damage from some sort of pest. The leaves have holes in them, and there seems to be some sort of reddish-pink growth/substance on several spots throughout the damaged area. I can't see any active pests on the leaves. Does this pose a danger to the bushes? What is causing this damage? And how do I take care of the pest? Thank you very much.

Expert Response

As you cannot identify any current insects, I can only make an educated guess that the damage is caused by insects, possibly Japanese Beetles.  There is nothing to be done at this point except give your shrubs TLC.  It will not spread to other shrubs but insects can so check your other shrubs regularly.  Just because you had a beetles problem does not necessarily indicate a grub problem.  These beetles can fly a long distance.  Check your other shrubs regularly and watch for scouts.  Knock them off into soapy water before they have a chance to invite others.  https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/japanese-beetles
