Seedless Red Maples #871856

Asked June 06, 2024, 10:17 AM EDT

Is the Matador Red Maple a good choice for a boulevard tree? Is it truly seedless? Is the Brandywine Red Maple a better choice and is it seedless. One garden center tells me there is no such thing as a seedless maple tree. Thank you for this opportunity.

Expert Response

Good Morning Joanne,

Thank you for contacting the U of M Extension Service.

We are volunteers who answer yard and garden questions. We are not familiar with every different hybrid of trees and shrubs on the market. I researched the Matador Maple. It is a hybrid distributee by First Editions: https://firsteditionsplants.com/product/matador-maple/

You might contact them to ask detailed questions abouto the Matador.

Here is a link to the Brandywine maple: https://shop.arborday.org/brandywine-maple

I am attaching another document on the Brandywine maple. This information indicates the Brandywine prefers acidic soil. Have you had your soil tested? Link to soil testing:

The metropolitan twin cities generally does not have acidic soil.

You might consider consulting with a certified arborist about your choice: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional

I am not familiar with a seedless maple, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Good Luck!
