Is the shape of this Bald-faced Hornet’s nest (still a work in progress) typical?

That is not a typical finished shape of a bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) nest. I would suspect that they will fix it by the time it is completed. It is also possible that this is a symptom of a parasite infection, disease, or chemical exposure.
