Cut leaves #871809

Asked June 05, 2024, 8:14 PM EDT

I have recently noticed that bits and pieces of leaves have been falling from my trees. The affected trees where I've seen them are oak. I've attached a picture (quality not so good but think it gives the idea). The leaf pieces look like they have been chewed out of the leaf. I'm wondering what may be going on here. Thank you

Expert Response

While the damage you have noticed may be startling, it appears to be the work of the leafcutter bee, Megachle.  They use the section they have cut out to push against the walls of her nest.  She then fills it with pollen and nectar and lays an egg.  When the egg pupates, there is sufficient food t keep the young alive.
The Magachile is a solitary, native bee.  The damage done to the leaves will not harm the tree.
