Help my amazing Oak Tree #871806

Asked June 05, 2024, 7:36 PM EDT

I have a very large ~50 year old white (?) oak tree on north side of my house. For past ~5 yrs, leaves shrivel early in season. We have used Arborscape Arborist for diagnosis & treatment which was “silkworm” and intermittent spray w/ deep root treatments. The tree has not rebounded and this year shrivel/crisping already occurring- will upload leaf pics from photo log taken 6/4/24. A neighbor who climbed the tree to cut off a dead limb reported small “bore holes” on Lia & trunk but spotted no insects. I am determined to try to improve the health of our oak tree and very hopeful you can help me. I appreciate any information /recommendations/ plan of care you can provide. Thanks in advance. <personal data hidden> ; Susan<personal data hidden> Lakewood CO

Expert Response

Good morning!

I am sorry to hear about your oak - do those lighter green spots turn brown or do they just stay the light green and dry out?

Would you be able to send a few more photos of the entire tree? Including the base of the tree.

Has the treatment for silkworms helped the tree in the past and this year it is just not bouncing back?

Did your neighbor take any photos of the holes when they climbed it?

If I cannot diagnose on the follow-up photos you send, we have a diagnostic team at our office that can take a look and run a few tests to see if we can diagnose it!

Thanks so much for reaching out,

Rachel

Susan, thank you for reaching out to us.  I am sorry you are having issues with this beautiful oak.  The pics are very helpful.

This year we are seeing damage similar to this cropping up on oaks on the front range.  Our CSU professionals are trying to sort this out.

I would highly recommend you bring a sample to our office so our diagnostic professionals could make an accurate determination.  This is especially important since we are seeing this damage to other oaks this summer.  With an accurate diagnosis’s we would be able to give you a helpful recommendation.

Our office is at 9595 Nelson Rd, Longmont.  We are on the eastside of the fairground complex.  Our office hours are 8:00 to 4:00.  Our office is located in the basement.

You can drop the sample off and fill out a question sheet.  Our team will examine the damage and get back to you.

Some questions to provide answers to when you come in.

  1. How old is the tree, if known.
  2. Do you know the variety of oak
  3. How long have you lived at the property
  4. Do you have other oaks on the property, or nearby property, that are being similarly affected

The holes appear to be woodpecker damage based upon the pattern.  There could be other sources of the damage.  However, if you are seeing woodpeckers around it is likely damage from them.
