Expert Response

Hi Richard, thanks for the question.

This spruce does appear to have a problem.  The upper canopy seems to have dead limbs and the yellowing needles in the other pictures seem indicate a problem.  Spruce trees shed needles, usually needles three years or older, in the fall as a normal course of events.  Some shedding at other times is not unusual, in this case there seems to be more going on.  A needle cast or other disease, spider mites, stress (water, soil compaction, nutrients) could be the cause.

When did you notice the problem? Have you had any issues with standing water, or drought?

No change in water condition, 10 plus years with no change in watering.  I suspect mites or some sort of a disease. Thinking spraying with something would be first think to try. What would you recomend.

Hi again,

Let's try to identify the problem so we can get the correct treatment.

It would be a good idea to check for spider mites:  Check out the following link for how to do this:

Some close ups of some needles showing needle top and bottoms will help to see if we are dealing with a needle cast disease.  See picture in this link:

Look for any sap oozing on the tree.  A photo would be helpful.

I hope to hear back soon.
