Hello, I’m looking for a native species that will provide year round privacy along a property line. Mature height needs to be about 10-15’ . Deer resistant would be great. If it grows quickly that’s a big plus. I’m not interested in something to prune regularly as I prefer the ‘natural look’. The soil drains well. There were some large walnut trees near the property line that were recently cut down. Thank you for your expertise and consideration!

Hello Cory
Thank you for your question.
The very specific preferences that you describe gives you some good, yet limiting choices for a privacy screen on your property line.
I am sharing a couple good fact sheets that may help you with your choices.
One of these fact sheets concerns the fact that large walnut trees were recently cut down in that area. That is important information due to potential walnut toxicity in the remaining root system. Therefore I am including information on walnut tree
toxicity.
The link below has a list of Ohio native plants, which includes conifers/evergreens that best meet the criteria you ask for.
Keep scrolling toward the end of the info until you get to Thuja (arborvitae) and Juniperus (Eastern Red Cedar, etc), which are probably your best choices.
Make sure you use protection from deer. They can and will ruin young trees, especially during the rut.

The following link is about walnut toxicity. This information is just a heads up, as the two conifer species I mention above seem to be less affected, if at all.

I hope this information is useful to you and I thank you again for using the Ask Extension on line service.
