Pruning clematis #871774

Asked June 05, 2024, 4:49 PM EDT

An unpruned clematis has prolific blooms at top of plant, but no leaves near bottom. What’s best pruning advice? Can just some of plant be pruned back to 12” (after blooming) to promote new lower growth? Or should entire plant be pruned back … and when? Thank you.

Expert Response

It’s important to know what variety of clematis you have. There are 3 types and they each have different pruning requirements. Donahue grows most of the clematis sold locally and they have some great information on their website.
