Pyrocantha removal #871758

I want to remove my pyrocantha permanently. I have started to dig out the roots, but one root is inaccessible due to being under another big root of a neighboring tree trunk. My question, if I cut the inaccessible root (about 5-7 inches below the surface) and dig out the rest of the pyrocantha, will it kill it, or will it grow back and cause more problems? The root is 2 inches in diameter. Other ideas?

Expert Response
Pyracantha tends not to grow root suckers, so a gamble to leave it seems reasonable. If it regrows, regular (weekly) removal of all growth will eventually starve and kill the root. Another option is painting cut ends with a systemic herbicide, such as one with Triclopyr. Follow product label and all safety precautions for any product you use.
